Naughty Dog made a controversial splash with the most-anticipated game of 2020

This is a series of feminist gaming reviews of major PS4 story-based games.

This game had me in a whirlwind of emotions. I’ve rewritten this piece at least three times since I first finished playing TLOU2. Naughty Dog was obviously trying to create a fresh, different sort of game with this highly-anticipated sequel, one that shakes up your typical toxic-masculine action narrative.

Because of that, there isn’t just a quick handful of ways TLOU2 has moved toward feminism. Instead, they’re rethinking the way we interact with the characters and games themselves. For me, that is a great start to breaking into more feminist narratives. If no one tries new ideas, we’ll have no clue what we want them to look like. There are a lot of good things and a lot to criticize in this game (like, why is it so damn long?!), but ultimately, TLOU2 is off to a great start by thinking outside the box.

This game is insanely fun. The gameplay is familiar to fans of the original, and has enough upgrades and new monsters to keep them entertained. Also, the story is incredibly compelling. You won’t want to put down the remote until you find out what happens (but you have to because it’s 30+…
